Created by: infozooms | Last Updated: 07/26/2010

Are you one of those people who hates to lose an argument? If so, and you are tired of arguments turning into shouting matches and hurtful words being thrown around, we want to show you how you can win an argument nicely and every time. The great thing about this list is that by using any of these suggestions, you can successfully position yourself as the stronger person in your little dispute.

1. Control your voice level

Believe it or not, you can actually win an argument, even those with the potential of becoming heated, by simply keeping your voice at a normal speaking level. If you start to yell the other person yells louder and more. Instead, all you have to do is talk in a controlled, normal tone and the other person will follow your lead so the disagreement is resolved without voices ever being raised.

2. Stop attacking

It is common for arguments to become personal attacks. After all, we know that words hurt and sometimes to get a point across, a nasty statement that has nothing to do with the argument subject is made. Instead of making the argument personal, make a firm statement that the person is wrong and then in your calm and controlled voice, explain why.

3. Become allies

You can win an argument by interjecting comments that you know the other person would agree with. This technique makes your opponent more of an ally than enemy. Once you make a statement that the other person agrees with, you immediately put yourself in the leadership role.

4. Name calling

Sometimes, arguments become the perfect platform for calling your opponent a bad name. Even if you cannot stand the person you are arguing with, never resort to name calling, which makes you look bad and out of control. In fact, name calling is kind of elementary and better left on the playground for first graders.

5. Argue the facts

A good argument is one where facts are laid out by you and the other person. In other words, instead of the argument being based on feelings, thoughts, or emotions, you should know the facts and stick to them as much as possible.

6. Questions

If you want to win an argument, remember to ask questions. This pins your opponent in a corner, forcing him or her to address the issue and hopefully look at things from your perspective.

7. Say nothing

If you find yourself getting into an argument with someone that you know will push you to the limit, someone that quickly gets heated, or a person that will argue and never give in, then say nothing. In this case, the other person feels frustrated and defeated. Remember, in certain situations, it takes more power and control to say nothing than to get into an argument that is going to end badly.

2 MORE USER SUGGESTIONS

1. Be open-minded (by robyn)

In addition to knowing the facts and accepting that every person has a different perception of reality it helps to win an argument by staying open minded. Of course, no one wants to admit being incorrect or mistaken but you might learn a valuable piece of information that reveals you were actually wrong.
