1. Earth’s gravity is uneven

Gravity is not equal around the globe. There are areas where the gravity is reduced and places where it is more than the normal level. Gravity is lowest at a certain area in India and highest in the mid-Pacific. Scientists still do not know the reason for this disparity.

2. Leaky atmosphere

Thermal energy increases the velocity and causes some of the molecules at the external edge of the Earth's atmosphere to escape from the planet's gravity. This results in a slow leakage of the atmosphere into space, especially of hydrogen which has a low molecular weight.

3. The Moon is moving away

Recent research has shown that the Moon's orbit is slowly growing bigger and the Moon is moving away from the Earth. Scientists estimate that the Moon is receding from the Earth at about 4 centimeters a year.

4. Earth is not round

Contrary to popular belief that the Earth is like a round ball, the actual shape of our planet is an oblate spheroid meaning it is slightly flattened on the top and bottom poles.

5. Deserts are not all sandy

Most of the Earth’s deserts are not made up entirely of sand. About 85% of them are rocks and gravel. The largest is the Sahara desert in Africa which is roughly the size of the United States.

6. Deepest lake

The deepest lake in the world is Lake Baikal. It has a length of 400 miles, a width of roughly 50 miles, and depth of 5,390 feet. It is so deep that all five of The Great Lakes could be emptied into it. Baikal contains roughly 20% of the world’s surface water and is also the oldest lake in the world at more than 25 million years.

7. Very hot

Another Earth interesting fact that you may not know is that the hottest recorded temperature was from Azizia, Libya measuring 136 degrees Fahrenheit (57.8 Celsius) on Sept. 13, 1922. In Death Valley, California it got up to 134 Fahrenheit on July 10, 1913.

8. Lot's of dust

Relatively small amounts of dust particles—often called micrometeroids—exist in the solar system and were produced in collisions between asteroids or in the shedding of material from comets. According to scientists, about 30,000 tons of interplanetary dust reaches Earth's surface every year.

9. Lot's of salt

Everyone knows that the oceans are salty, but believe it or not if the oceans were to dry up there would be enough salt to cover the earth with a 500 foot layer!

10. The Earth is shaky

Here is an Earth interesting fact that you might not know - our planet has about 1 million earthquakes a year, yet most are never even registered. There are places where earthquakes occur almost constantly and go completely unnoticed (e.g. California, Alaska, Peru, Iran, Turkey, etc.).
