Created by: infozooms | Last Updated: 07/24/2010

If you are among the millions of people struggling with fatigue, you must be wondering what the major fatigue reasons are. While mild fatigue is annoying, serious cases can be dangerous and even deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), of all accidents occurring each year, approximately 55,000 are fatigue related. In Europe, VicRoads Road Accident reports that of all road fatalities, 20% are due to fatigue. Here are some of the top fatigue reasons that may be making even mandane tasks difficult.

1. Inadequate and improper sleep

Many people do not sleep long enough nor do they sleep well. Even if you tend to be a night owl, it is imperative that you get a minimum of seven hours sleep, preferably eight. Additionally, make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive, temperature in the bedroom a little on the cool side, and the room void of any light.

2. Sleep disorders

Often, fatigue is caused by some type of sleep disorder. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Epilepsy, Narcolepsy, and different types of Sleep Apnea such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) are just a few examples. In addition to eating a healthy diet, you want to maintain normal weight and stop smoking (if applicable). If necessary, a sleep specialist would help, recommending medication, therapies, or devices to promote restful sleep.

3. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

In some cases, chronic fatigue is caused by a condition known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. With this, you would struggle with fatigue for a minimum of six months and find managing daily activities nearly impossible. Although no “magic pill” exists for this illness, the level of fatigue could be reduced by developing proper sleep habits, exercising daily, and eating a well-balanced diet.

4. Poor diet

Eating the wrong foods is among the top fatigue reasons that get ignored. Generally foods with high sugar or carbohydrate content create a quick rush of energy, which is then followed by overwhelming fatigue. Remember, the most important meal of the day is breakfast but for all meals, stick with lean meats, whole grains, low fat dairy, and fresh fruits and vegetables so you would have more energy on a consistent basis.

5. Anemia

Most people rarely connect anemia with fatigue reasons but with a deficiency of red blood cells in the body, oxygen needed for organs and tissues is not delivered effectively, especially in women due to menstrual cycles. Your doctor would determine the cause of the anemia but typically, a good iron supplement along with adding more iron-rich foods to the diet would correct the problem of anemia and eliminate fatigue.

6. Depression

Along with affecting the mind, depression has a negative impact on the body, often recognized as no appetite, headaches, and extreme fatigue. Depression can be chronic, even inherited, or related to a one-time situation or experience. This is definitely not something to take lightly so if you feel fatigued and depressed, you want to see your doctor so the appropriate medication and/or therapy could be prescribed.

7. Diabetes

With this disease, instead of sugar moving through the cells of the body where it converts into energy, it stays in the bloodstream. Diabetes can cause many physical problems, one being fatigue. Therefore, if you experience any of the common symptoms of diabetes such as fatigue, weight gain, and excessive thirst, talk to your doctor.

8. Thyroid problems

With hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid, the body’s metabolism decreases, which means your body is converting fuel into energy at a much slower pace than normal. Fatigue is a very common symptom, along with weight gain. Your doctor would draw blood to confirm hypothyroidism and from there, synthetic hormones would help restore normal thyroid function.

9. Caffeine

One of the most surprising fatigue reasons is caffeine consumption. We all know that caffeine can boost energy levels, whether as coffee, tea, soda, or chocolate. However, if you have too much in your system, you would likely have the opposite effect. To alleviate the problem of fatigue, you would need to limit the amount of daily caffeine and avoid it completely four to six hours prior to bedtime.

10. Heart disease

Overwhelming fatigue associated with normal physical activity, perhaps vacuuming the house, mowing the yard, or bringing groceries in from the car could indicate heart disease. Because this is very serious, if you find that you become exhausted from simple physical exertion, talk to your doctor. The good news is that with proper medication, changes in lifestyle, and therapies, you could live a long and healthy life without being fatigued.
